ICFO · Plasmon Nano-Optics

The intrinsic intensity and confinement of plasmon fields at the surface of noble metal nanostructures offer a great potential for the manipulation of light at the sub-wavelength scale. Through spatial and spectral engineering of plasmon properties, we aim at extending down to the nanometer scale key concepts and functionalities required for the creation of next-generation nano-optical devices. Our research relies on a constant interaction between modeling, nanofabrication, and optical characterization. Activities include light control at the nanoscale, creation of 2-D plasmon-based optical elements, and micro and nano-optical manipulation with plasmon fields as well as the study of heat generation at the nanoscale for biomedical applications.

Key Personnel

Prof. Romain Quidant received M.Sc. (2000) and Ph.D. (2002) degrees from ‘The University of Burgundy’ in Dijon (France) in laser-matter interaction and nano-optics, respectively. Since 2002 he has worked in Barcelona at ICFO within the field of nanoplasmonics. In 2006, he was appointed junior Professor and group leader of the Plasmon NanoOptics group at ICFO. Based on his achievements during the period 2006-2009, he has recently been appointed tenure Professor both at ICFO and ICREA. In 2009, he has also been awarded the Fresnel prize from the European Physics Society for his outstanding contribution to the field of plasmon optics. R. Quidant is co-author of about 50 peer reviewed articles in international journals (including the most prestigious ones like Nature Physics, Phys. Rev. Lett. And Nanoletters), delivered more than 20 invited talks at international conferences and seminars and have been involved in different national and European projects. He also serves in the scientific boards of several prestigious international conferences.
